Our Story
The Independent Taxi was founded in Baltimore City in 1992 by an African American named James Mears. Independent Taxi was the first taxi company licensed, owned, and operated by a minority in the City of Baltimore.
In October 2006, the company was sold to the “Howards,” who already owned an auto repair shop that specialized in Ford Crown Victoria’s, which are the vehicle models used for taxicabs.
From an initial two-vehicle fleet company, Independent Taxi has now grown to over 100 vehicles ranging from sedans, hybrids, minivans, and wheelchair accessible. The Independent Taxi has also expanded its areas of operation, servicing Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County and employ more than 20 talented and hardworking individuals.
We offer our services to schools, offices, hospitals, airports, businesses, profit or non-profit organizations, and the general public.
In today’s world, technology has become entrenched in our daily lives. To improve service delivery in the fast-growing technological innovation world, Independent Taxi has updated our out-of-date dispatching system to a more sophisticated, accessible, and customer friendly computerized dispatching system. This system offers in-vehicle credit card payment processing system, customer app, and so much more. The system also allows our drivers to respond more promptly to orders as well as improving customers’ convenience in processing payments, thus making its operation efficient and cost-effective.
